Rojo Johnson

Earlier in the week:
"The Round Rock Express have acquired Billy Ray "Rojo" Johnson... Johnson, who was born in East Texas but was raised in Venezuela, recently had his prison sentence commuted. He served time for running a smuggling ring that imported rare and illegal species of reptiles into the United States from South America during the mid-to-late 1990s."
Pitcher Rojo Johnson made his minor league debut for the Round Rock Express last night. Astonishingly, he threw only one pitch before being chased out of the ballpark. Just watch.

Keenan Thompson

Keenan's had a rough go of trying to be funny on Saturday Night Live. After all, he's been on the show in some capacity since 2003 and I can count very few memorable moments since then. But things seem to be turning around after all this time, right? I for one love his new "What Up With That?" sketch, and now he's getting involved with Digital Shorts? Fantastic.

And let's please all love this (and any) "Scared Straight" sketch from S35E05.

So, Keenan is sort of maybe hitting his stride, right?

Cloudy With a Chance of Samberg

Cubsicle can finally move on from all of these slop posts about music to return to our regularly scheduled programming: fanblogging about Andy Samberg minutiae.

In today's video Samberg, one of the "lesser stars" of the upcoming children's movie Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs, attempts to show the viewer how animation is made, even though he has no idea.

Like all Lonely Island productions it starts off seemingly legitimate and ends up...somewhere much different.

Watch it HERE.

Abby Elliott

Hey! Did you know that there's a cast member currently on SNL named Abby Elliott? Neither did I! Nevertheless, Abby IS a cast member, which makes her father, Chris Elliott, the first ever Not Ready for Prime Time player to have a child who is also a cast member.

Here is proof.

So Far, So Good

Jimmy Fallon Slow Jams the News Two shows into his stint as the new host of Late Night, Jimmy Fallon has shown himself to be a decent host. Like Conan O'Brien before him, you have to "get" the brand of humor, but if you liked any of his SNL work, that shouldn't be too hard. He's a little awkward, but it's the kind of awkward you've come to expect from him, except now it comes with a bit more professionalism and quieter hair. You get the feeling that he really wants to succeed, and although I was only 11 when Conan debuted, I get the distinct feeling that Jimmy's first two shows have shown more promise than Conan's first few.

One thing I've enjoyed thoroughly is Fallon's approach to connecting with viewers. He's had countless video blogs leading up to the debut where he's answered questions from fans and taken suggestions. He also utilizes popular social sites like facebook. And most important, his choice of The Roots as house band has proven brilliant so far. They are phenomenal as a backup band, and even helped with a bit on night number 1. Click on that picture above to see Jimmy Fallon and the Roots, "slow jam the news."

Even More Awesometown

Glirk
Awesometown - Glirk link By now you've seen the intro and the intro's intro. Here's yet another youtube link, this time to a full length sketch which made it onto both versions of the Awesometown pilot. Nothing too out of the ordinary for the comedy style of Samberg, seen here playing the part of a sexually amiguous alien. Enjoy.

More Awesometown

Jack Black as George Washington
Jack Black Washington Before their pilot for Awesometown was complete, Andy, Jorma, and Akiva were able to enlist the duties of Jack Black to shoot a 1 minute introduction to the show. In it he performs as George Washington the way only Jack Black could. Once again, the picture is the link.

Awesometown

When last we visited "The Dudes" of Lonely Island, they had just released their new album. In passing on the info I mentioned they had previously worked on a television pilot before ultimately landing in different behind-the-scenes roles on Saturday Night Live. Their pilot, called Awesometown, was commissioned originally by Fox and then again by MTV, neither of which ultimately picked up the show for a season. Then Lorne Michaels came calling and the rest is history. The link to the clip is in the picture above. It's the pilot's opening sequence. You can start to see why their brand of humor is better served in small doses as SNL Digital Shorts rather than full broadcasts.

MacGruber!

It was nice to see Richard Dean Anderson (AKA MacGyver) helping to poke fun at himself by appearing alongside Will Forte in his SNL "MacGruber" sketches and Pepsi commercial. But I was surprised to see he had either put on a ton of weight or had some awful plastic surgery, or possibly both. I couldn't tell if I was looking MacGyver or Bruce Jenner.

Check it out for yourself here, here, or here.

Separated at Birth 2

Yet another installment of Separated at Birth, again inspired by my beloved Philadelphia Eagles. Apparently I only make these marginal celebrity lookalike connections during football games.

Eagles TE Brent Celek & SNL Star Andy Samberg

I think it's really pretty close, right? It would be hard for anyone to have quite as big of a nose as Samberg, but if Celek did they would be dead on separated at birth brothers, one being a puny funny man and the other a jacked up football player.

For those keeping score this is our second Samberg reference in less than a month.

Tina Fey

This Just In: Tina Fey continues to completely blow away the competition for "Best/Most Famous Person" to ever graduate from my alma mater, Upper Darby High School. It hasn't even been close since the mid-90s. Sorry Jim Croce, Lloyd Alexander, and Dr.Jack Ramsey of NBA coaching fame.

For the rest of us: Becoming a hack local politician is probably your best bet of even cracking the list.

The Lonely Island presents...

For fans of such SNL digital shorts as Lazy Sunday, Dick in a Box, and Jizz in my Pants comes this album, "Incredibad," by The Lonely Island, a group of film makers compromised most notably of Andy Samberg (SNL) and his buddies Jorma Taccone and Akiva Schaffer. Will it be funny? Probably only if you like their SNL work (they all write for SNL, Andy acts for SNL) and can stand the absurdity. The record comes out February 10th.

If it sounds like the greatest thing ever to you, then their website is definitely worth checking out too. I suggest watching their failed tv pilot, "Awesometown."
